In recent times, persecution against Christianity has increased with the rise of atheism and different beliefs in God’s inexistence.
We are not blindsided by all these as Christians. In fact, we were expecting them because we had been warned about them.
Jesus told us what to expect when the end times come in Matthew 24 and in his second letter to Timothy (2 Tim 3:1-5), Paul explained what will happen in the “perilous times.”
So, no, we are not surprised. However, expecting persecution is different from actually experiencing it.
And as expected, our reactions have been different. Many Christians, in a bid to win people over or defend their faith try to resort to logic to explain the things of the Spirit.
I understand the desire to want to defend our faith – even though God doesn’t require that from us, I believe He wants us to witness our faith and not get into arguments – because it can be really difficult to look away when your faith is been talked down on.
So, many of us have not simply tried to use logic in our argument, we are being pressured to try to relate with our faith using logic.
And the thing is Christianity is not logical and this is something we have to come to terms with if we want to continue in this journey.
There is nothing logical about a talking donkey, being raised from death, parting of a sea, the defeat of Jericho and most importantly, the virgin birth, death and resurrection of Christ.
Our Christianity is based on the fact that Jesus is God, that He came to the world as man, had human experiences, took our sins upon Himself and died in our place, then rose up on the third day.
If you don’t believe this, you are not a Christian because believing in the above is actually what makes us Christians.
So it is without saying that the basis of Christianity is not logical, so why do we think that the world can understand what our faith is about or why do we think we can be logical about it?
The world is going to insult us for not using our brains and that shouldn’t surprise or even offend us because the essence of our faith cannot be understood by the human brain.
“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” – 1 Cor 2:14 (NKJV).
Also, God deliberately chooses the things that make no sense to man to further confound them.
“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” – 1 Cor 1:27(NKJV).
What am I saying? While it is not wrong to be logical; I consider myself more logical than emotional, it is important to understand that when it comes to the things of the Spirit, many times, the human logic has to take a back seat.
And this is why God emphasises faith; we cannot journey in the path that leads to life without faith. In fact, God made it clear that it is impossible to please Him without faith (Heb 11:6).
Many of the requirements of Christianity can only be met if we are ready to journey with God with faith and not what we think makes sense.
And even many more personal requirements that God will demand of our lives will be completely illogical.
If we are not ready to simply have faith, we are going to be living in constant disobedience.
That is why we cannot afford to be like the world. We have to accept to be seen as stupid and foolish, we have to be ready to be disliked because we live differently.
In the kingdom of God, our language is not “is this logical” but “is this a walk of faith or is this as a result of faith in God?”
