Remote work is becoming increasingly popular due to technological advancement, globalisation, and the advent of COVID-19. The pandemic showed that people can work anywhere and still be productive.
While remote work has many advantages, one of its greatest challenges is receiving payments, especially when you work for an international company or clients as a freelancer.
Luckily, there are different options to receive payment as a remote worker, so it is not an impossible situation; you just need to know where to look.
This article will show you the 5 effective ways to receive payment as a remote worker.
5 Effective Ways to Receive Payment as a Remote Worker
1. Direct Transfer
This is the traditional method of transferring money from one bank account to another. The client or company sends you money from their bank account, which you receive in yours. The money could be sent to a Domiciliary account or your local currency.
The problem with this method is that it often takes days to process and is accompanied by huge transaction fees, up to $25 in certain cases.
Of course, it is probably the best method if it is between parties in the same country.
2. Online Payment Platforms
This payment method is probably the most popular among remote workers and freelancers. In this case, you leverage the services of online payment platforms to receive your money and then transfer it to your bank account.
This method is popular because it is not geographically limited, as most platforms function globally. However, it also doesn’t come free. Some charge per transaction and others use a subscription method. Plus, most of them charge for conversion.
Popular choices are PayPal and Stripe.
One disadvantage is that some of them restrict certain services in some countries. For instance, with PayPal, some countries can only send money out but cannot receive money as individuals. So, it might not be the best option for an individual freelancer.
3. Digital Wallets
Another way to receive payments as a remote worker is through digital wallets. Like the previous option, you can also receive payments globally. Digital wallets facilitate receiving money in your wallet and transferring it to your bank account.
As expected, they charge transaction fees and currency conversion, which vary based on the country’s currency.
They provide users with a virtual bank account in major trade currencies like the USD, EUR and GBP.
Your clients send it to the virtual account, and you receive the money in your digital wallet.
Payoneer and Revolut are great options to consider for this.
I use Payoneer, and I often recommend it to my freelancer friends because of how efficient I have found its service. I receive my money in my wallet and in my bank account within a day or two.
As I already stated, I get a US bank account as that’s the currency I mostly interact with, but I can have one in other major currencies if I want. Then, I convert it to my local currency or directly to my Domiciliary account. In my experience, the process is seamless and hitch-free.
On both platforms, you can sign up for free.
4. Cryptocurrency
Cryptocurrency is another option that is increasingly gaining recognition in the remote work community. It is becoming a favourite because it is seamless, borderless, and decentralised. It does not involve the usual bureaucracy and processes associated with the traditional banking system.
5. Physical Cheque
Although the least convenient on the list, it is still an option you can consider if your client is domiciled in your country. Most people don’t use this method because it requires waiting for the mail and physically going to the bank to cash the cheque.
But if it works for you, why not?

Conclusion
Remote work is the future of work, as technological advancements make global communication and collaboration easier. Therefore, it is very likely that payment options will also become more convenient.
However, even with the options available, you can find a suitable way to receive payment as a remote worker. Consider your unique situation; one of the above methods should work perfectly for you.
